Cloud versus Ground

I am back! Yes, back with a bang! Writing is not an easy virtue, it requires dedication and hard work. I moved over my blog from a physical data center to Amazon Web services and I had to "shut down" ( of course, I had no option) my blog while the transition was going in.

Honestly, it has not been an easy ride but as usual, that is the most interesting thing of being in this game - I mean profession - always facing challenges on a daily basis and looking for ways of not succumbing to them. I read a lot about the cloud thing and visualization and again, I could not get my head around all the buzz words and the technical jargon.

I finally decided to "play" around with the concept when the lease at the data center location I was using expired. I contemplated hosting "myself" in my basement and getting dedicated IP addresses or better still, subscribing to one the thousands of ASPs offering the platform and mash-up of tools I was interested in. Along the line, like the proverbial - jolt from a bolt in the sky - it hit me. Why not go to the "CLOUD" and experience the out of the body phenomenon IT buffs have been raving about.

Long and short of it, I checked out Amazon Web Services and "Lo and Behold", it has a package/service to allow for newbies to test drive the services for "FREE" for about a year. I jumped on the offer and after the usual "stumble and fall", I was able to get the services set up and running. It has pre-assembled - for lack of a better term, images of OSes as well as tools for varying business needs. It also offers a FREE dedicated IP address called "Elastic IP" which you can map against any of the instances associated with an account. All in all, for a test drive, it is a good deal and I will encourage anybody into IT to try it out. The only requirement is having a valid debit or credit card that can be validated electronically before you can start using the services. In my view ( not original), the era of abandoned warehouses turned into data centers is gone. Welcome to the era of the "CLOUD" - you need not to bother yourself about the latest hardware out there or how to solve the puzzle of configuring a server, hiring NETWORK folks and the usual myriad of maintaining a data center, just turn to the "CLOUD", figuratively, and you are in business.

The best way to describe the whole process of the "CLOUD" thing is - Plug in, Plug out. With a snap of the fingers, you can do things, hitherto, that would have taken hours - if not days, in a matter of seconds. Anyway, enough of the "hero worship" of the "CLOUD" thing, let's get back to reality. We still need very smart - out of the box, visionaries to get us to the next stage. I think the "CLOUD" thing is still at its infancy and we are yet to reap the full potential of what it has to offer.
